This month we celebrate the Dads in our lives. And I must say this is one particular present that I really enjoy shopping for. I find lots of inspiration in the better wine stores and online gift websites. If your father appreciates wine there are gift ideas for all budgets.
Everyone needs a good reliable bottle opener. There is a massive range available; it really just depends on your budget. Personally I am a fan of the simple double hinged waiter's friend. It takes up little room in the kitchen drawer and usually not too expensive. It doesn't look too fancy, but it does the job.
A perfect gift for those fathers who drink wines which are a little older is a double-prong corkscrew. As wine gets older the cork tends to deteriorate, especially if it hasn't been stored correctly. The double-prong corkscrew doesn't use an actual screw to pull out the cork; instead the handle has two prongs, which are pushed into the bottle along the neck, pinching the cork away from the sides. The cork is then twisted out. This is a perfect opener for older wines.
A wine decanter would also be an ideal gift. Generally speaking we are impatient and tend to drink our wines very young. Decanting a tough young wine can make it suppler. And they are great for serving wines with sediment. Decanters are available in many shapes and sizes. I love the fact that they are practical and look great at a dinner party. My advice would be to choose one that can easily be cleaned and fits inside your cupboard.
With Singapore's high humidity and warm climate, any dad who is serious about collecting good wines should invest in a wine temperature controlled cabinet. A wine cabinet helps to ensure wines mature under optimal conditions. They come in different sizes. Before you purchase a cabinet carefully consider how many bottles Dad would have cellaring at one time. An ideal wine cabinet will control humidity, temperature, UV light and ventilation. I would recommend Vintec. And as a nice way to start Dad's wine collection why not choose a wine for his new wine cabinet? Recently I tried the Devil's Lair Cabernet Sauvignon. The palate was layered with cassis, roasted cocoa beans and blackcurrants with a hint of smokey oak. This classic Margaret River blend was an absolute pleasure to drink, but I can definitely see the potential in cellaring this wine for 5 years.
